You, Lalage!

Varoujan is famous for his patriotic poetry, dedicated to his homeland and people, his songs of Armenian mountains and the villagers. His love poems, very romantic, sensual and erotic – are not as widely known, and “…Ո՛վ Լալագե” (…You, Lalage!) is one of them, and one of my favourites. It’s so rich and intense that makes your head spin the first time you read it. It was first published in 1911 in Tbilisi, generating lots of interest and both positive and negative responses.

Poetry is a concise form of art: it usually describes and talks about one feeling and it’s rare to condense a huge bouquet of emotions in one poem like Varoujan does, especially in this one.

The title of the poem is already intriguing. It starts with an ellipsis (…), which means a word or a thought is omitted and makes you so curious what is it he wants to tell Lalage.

Then it begins. Like a magical storyteller, he sets the scene. The first verse is reminding Lalage the last autumn month of her pregnancy, and when they went for walk in an orchard, where ‘the trees were wrought in gold under the pale rays of sunset’.

The poet then forgets Lalage in the second verse, describing the orchard, where the servants are picking fruit: an Ethiopian girl placing apples in her basket, singing a song in her language; dark-skinned boys picking walnuts which colours their hands green. He paints a vivid picture of carts carrying clusters of grapes and ‘waves of wine’.

Oh but he was talking to Lalage, so she’s back in the third verse, being reminded how much her own pregnancy was like the nature’s fertility:

‘Soil was wet and sticky with sweetness and honey
like your heavy body, kissed all over,
Just like you, the peach tree was bent
Under its scented load;
And like your breasts,
Grapes were full of future
Laughter, joy and dance’

He moves on: Lalage is not the only reminder of the nature for him – but so are the servant girls, stomping grapes, with their hair flowing free under red sunset.

Then we have a sudden change of the tone, mid-sentence, mid-line. The poet is so careful with that he starts his next thought in parenthesis: (Would you let me confess, Lalage?). His confession sounds shocking, because for 2 pages he’s been singing to the beautiful Lalage, bearing his child – and suddenly he talks about having an ‘uprising of blood’, and wanting to impregnate everything around him, ‘like the sun, like the soil’. And while Lalage is turned to the pomergranate tree for a moment, biting the fruit’s red pearls sensually and full-mouthed; he kisses the Ethiopian girl, who’s making wine:

‘I kissed her… holding her Indian hair
Laid her smiling head on my chest
And kissed her, fully of desire – Lalage,
I kissed her…’

And once we take this in, this intense desire and lust for everything and everyone around him, Varoujan introduces yet another change – we’re thrown to the future, to today and he’s back to talking to Lalage, intimately and lovingly. The poem with 5 simple lines:

‘…But why are you crying
For that faraway autumn’s
Ease of scents?
You Lalage, beautiful as autumn,
You shouldn’t have cried today’.

3 pages, 4 verses: he starts with nostalgia for that beautiful day; admiration for her beauty; worship for her pregnancy and the miracles of the natures; lust, wonder and desire for the worker girls, temptation and succumbing to it immediately; then guilt and confession – and finally comforting Lalage, who’s ‘beautiful as autumn’.

It strikes me how much he’s just a man, in love with his wife, proud of her pregnancy and still tempted by another beautiful body – but at the same time he’s the godlike Varoujan, wanting to create life, impregnate everything ‘like the sun’.

I also love his anticipation of the future and his own idea of a perfect world: grapes becoming wine, fruit ripening, children being born, and a life full of laughter and dance, without tears.
